Delicious Tasting Babka

Babka cake is a sweet yeast cake and is a classic pastry for Eastern European cultures. This sort of cake is similar to a bundt cake, which became a popular desert in the United States in the 1950s. The bundt cake found inspiration from the European cake known as the gugelhupf, which also played a role in the creation of the babka cake.

There is a version of the babka cake that is associated with the Jewish tradition. This sort of babka is made from a doubled and twisted length of yeast dough and is usually baked in a high loaf pan. The dough in this instance contains cinnamon and/or chocolate, instead of the typical fruit filling. When it is finished, the babka is usually topped with streusel.

What is a Kosher Diet?

As the New York area's premier kosher food distributor, we have an understanding of what makes great kosher food, as well as what makes up a healthy kosher diet. Typically, kosher diets are divided into three categories:

  • meat
  • dairy
  • pareve

Pareve foods are prepared without meat, milk, or their derivatives and therefore permissible to be eaten with both meat and dairy dishes. This includes such foods as eggs, fish, fruit, vegetables, grains, pasta, coffee, and tea.

There are a few requirements that meat products must follow in order to become kosher. One requirement is that the meat must come from an animal that chews its cud and has split hooves. This is just a complicated way to say cow, sheep, and goats. Apart from the animal itself, the slaughtering of the animal and all processing has to follow the law and be done under rabbinical supervision. And the utensils for the animals must be kosher, as well.

Anything derived from or contains milk falls under the dairy category, including milk, butter, yogurt, and cheese. They, like meat, must also follow a specific set of criteria. They need to come from a kosher animal and be produced, processed and packaged on kosher equipment. Also, all ingredients must be kosher and free of meat derivatives.
